Seven Promises of India Marriage taken by Bride and Groom

Hello Guys this is my 2nd article on Indian Marriages, specifically Hindu Marriages. Most of us know about the Indian custom of taking 7 vows ( Saptpadh in sanskrit, sapt means seven and padh means foot) by bride and groom at the time of marriage. As a blogger I have been reading a lot of articles about Indian marriages, rites, rituals and about the 7 vows and their prominence in Indian wedding. These 7 promises are made by bride and groom by walking around the holy fire place (havankund) with the pandit (bramhin) chanting the veda mantras in the background and is not only witnessed by thousands of relatives but also by the gods and godesses who are invoked onto the mandap (stage of marriage) by the pandits.

At the beginning of the ritual the holy fire place (havankund) is lit with fire, the havankund comprise of wood, ghee and cow manure. The pandits now explains the use of wood, ghee and cow manure are burnt in fire. Scientifically it is proved that combustion of wood and ghee generate gasses that protect the ozone layer, thousands of years ago itself hindu pandits found that nature is the main source of survival hence to help nature back by filling small gaps in ozone layer this ritual has come up.

Many of us have a doubt that why the couple walks around the fire but not around the other elements of life. There are five elements of life (panch-maha-bhoot or panch-tatva) wind, water, fire, earth and sky with which the human body is believed to be made. Here is the reason why fire is main - Fire is a factor which bonds the couple for the rest of life and it is only thing that can seperate them i.e, when a person is dead he/she is burnt of pyre of wood according to hindu rituals. Therefore it is fire that bonds a couple till the eternity and it is fire thats seperates them. This shows that a married couple is inseperable and are joined by the Gods. In Hindu culture there is nothing called as divorce, if people follow the 7 vows that are taken by married couple at the time of marriage they will stay together happily for the rest of their life.

Now it's time for seating arrangement before the 7 vows are taken the bride sit to the right hand side of groom. The vedas are so particular about the seating position and the couple are made to sit in a way that they get the maximum blessings from nature and all its forms. After the vows the bride shifts to the left side of groom, this symbolises that now she is close to his heart. so wonderful right every small thing in a hindu marriage has its own significance, when understood them it leaves us mouth's opened.

Now the bride and groom are asked to stand and make 7 rounds (Satphere) or (7 pheras) around havankund (holy fire). With each round the bride and groom takes a promise. So we have come to the main part here are the 7 promises taken by bride and groom - Indian Marriages, Hindu Marriages
